Spartan Volleyball Team Opens Tournament with Victory
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The 12th-ranked Michigan State volleyball team defeated Drake, 15-9, 15-9, 15-11, in the first round of the MSU Invitational at Jenison Field House. Freshman Christie Landry hit .368 with 18 kills and 10 digs to help the Spartans improve to 3-1 overall.
Junior Jenna Wrobel also had a strong match for the Spartans, hitting .414 with 16 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Sophomore Tammy Vonderheide earned the starting nod and contributed nine kills and eight digs for the Spartans, who hit .317 as a team.
Drake hit .127 as a team and remained winless on the year with an 0-5 mark.
In the first match of the tournament, Bowling Green downed Duquesne, 15-1, 15-7, 2-15, 15-2.
The tournament continues on Saturday with four matches. Drake and Bowling Green open action at 9 a.m., followed by MSU and Duquesne at 11 a.m. The evening session begins at 5 p.m. with Duquesne and Drake, while MSU and Bowling Green close out the invitational with a 7 p.m. match.
