East Lansing, Mich. - - Michigan State junior libero Kori Moster is headed to Colorado Springs, CO this weekend to take part in the the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Moster, the two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and a 2014 AVCA All-American, will be among nearly 250 athletes attending this tryout camp. There are 248 tryout participants representing 106 different colleges; the athletes with remaining collegiate eligibility, (which includes Moster), will be evaluated for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as well as the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program (formerly U.S. Women's Senior A2 Teams). Three-time Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Olympic Hall of Famer Karch Kiraly and the U.S. Women's National Team staff will lead the tryout process.
From this camp, the national team staff will select two different teams; the first is a U.S. Collegiate National Team of 12 athletes which will travel to China June 13-27 for a series of training sessions and matches. The second group of selections will train and participate at the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Minneapolis. A projected 36 athletes will be invited to participate in that program, which will run June 22-30.
"This is my second time at the tryouts, so I know more of what to expect," explained Moster, who was one of three Spartans in the A2 program in the summer of 2013. "It's such a great experience, especially playing with so many talented players. The national team coaches are running the tryout, and there's so many opportunities to learn from them. I'm excited to get out to Colorado and get on the floor."
"We are so proud of Kori, and she represents our program so well," said head coach Cathy George. "She's a veteran of the A2 program, so I think they already aware of her work ethic and incredible talent. This presents an amazing opportunity for her, and I have no doubt that she can make an impact there."
USA Volleyball will be live-streaming the tryouts this weekend, beginning Friday at 4 p.m. ET. Fans can watch the tryout on the USA Volleyball Website. A complete list of participants can be found at www.teamusa.org.
Moster is the second Spartan participating with the USA Volleyball program this winter. Senior Alexis Mathews has been a part of the National Team Training Block in Anaheim since January 27.
