EAST LANSING, Mich. - Outside hitter Ashley Schatzle will join the Michigan State volleyball program for the 2005 season, Michigan State head coach Cathy George announced Thursday, May 5.

The Monroe, Mich., native will be reunited with George, whom she played for at Western Michigan last season. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter was a member of the 2004 All-MAC Freshman Team and led the Broncos with 355 kills (3.26 kills per game), while playing in 109 of WMU's 110 games. She also posted 119 digs, 60 total blocks (12 BS, 48 BA) and 12 service aces in her first year with the Broncos.

"Ashley was one of the main offensive weapons for Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference and really grew as the season went on," said George. "She is a very physical and athletic player and has a combined all-around game - defensive, passing and offensive skills.

"The coaching staff believes she will fit right into the Spartan program. She has the right attitude and focus to be a top level player."

Prior to her arrival at WMU, Schatzle played for Monroe High School where she was a three-sport athlete. A three-year letterwinner (2002-04) in volleyball, she earned first-team all-conference honors, honorable mention all-state and first-team all-region accolades. She also played for the Toledo Volleyball Club from 2001-04.

In addition to volleyball, she lettered in basketball and track. On the hardwood, she became the first player in school history to score 1,000 points and set school single-season records for blocks, free throws attempts and free throws made in a season. She was a regional qualifier in the 400-meter dash and the 1,600-meter relay in 2001.
