EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four members of the Michigan State volleyball program - seniors Alexis Mathews and Lauren Wicinski, junior Kori Moster and assistant coach Mike Gawlik - concluded their experiences at the 2013 U.S. Women's National Volleyball A2 Program in Dallas, Texas. Wicinski ended the week-long program by winning a Gold medal in the team competition.
After three days of training, the student-athletes were split up into teams for competition that ran from June 29-July 3. A different Spartan represented each team, as Mathews was selected to the Gold team, Wicinski was on the White squad, Moster played for the Red team and Gawlik was an assistant for the Blue team.
Wicinski was the offensive star of the program, leading the White team to a Gold medal on July 3 over Mathews and the Gold squad. The three-time All-American paced the White team with 25 points on 21 kills, three blocks and an ace in the championship match. Mathews had four kills and three blocks for the Gold. In the bronze medal match, Moster's Red team topped the Gawlik coached Blue team.
In the semifinal matches, Wicinski had 24 kills to lead White and Mathews chipped in eight kills and three blocks for the Gold to advance both teams to the championship match.
In round robin play, Wicinski led all attackers with 58 kills (5.3 kills per set). Mathews totaled 21 kills and eight blocks, while Moster was part of a libero rotation defensively for the Red.
Mathews and Wicinski competed at the A2 program for the second-straight season, while it was the first experience for Gawlik and Moster. The Spartans were one of 12 schools nationally to have multiple selections.
The Spartans begin the 2013 season on Aug. 30-31 at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
