Bailey Earns National Player of the Week Honors
Senior picks up second weekly honor after remarkable weekend
East Lansing, Mich. -- - Redshirt senior Autumn Bailey has received her second weekly honor after Michigan State’s upset of No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 1 Minnesota, as she has been named VolleyMob national Player of the week.
On Monday, she was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Bailey played an important role for MIchigan State (9-2, 2-0 Big Ten) as MSU opened B1G play with two upset wins on the road.
The Spartans defeated top-5 teams in back-to-back games for the first time in program history, and have started the season 2-0 in Conference action for the first time since 2013, when MSU defeated No. 1 Penn State and No. 13 Ohio State to begin B1G play – also in road games.
An outside hitter, Bailey averaged 4.75 digs per frame, committed just one reception error in 43 attempts (.977), and added 3.75 kills per set as MSU swept perhaps the most difficult road swing in the Big Ten this season. In the first match of the weekend, she established her MSU career best with 25 digs and added 16 kills for her first double-double of the season. She added a second double-double on Sunday at No. 1 Minnesota to the tune of 13 digs, 14 kills, and an assist.
On the season, Bailey is 10th in the Big Ten with 3.77 digs per set, while also averaging 3.06 kills per frame, second among Michigan State players. The Spartans, a senior-laden team that starts six fourth-year athletes, has three players averaging better than three kills per set.
The Spartans, No. 16 in the AVCA National Poll, have their first Big Ten home games this weekend when they host Maryland (Friday, 7 pm) and Ohio State (Saturday, 8 pm) at Jenison Field House.
