Nov. 29, 2016

Michigan State junior Alyssa Garvelink (Holland, Mich.) earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, as announced by the Conference office on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 29). In addition, classmates Rachel Minarick (Naperville, Ill.) and Autumn Bailey (Burlington, Ontario) were Honorable Mention selections, and senior Allyssah Fitterer (Georgetown, Ontario) was the team's recipient of the Sportsmanship Award. The All-Big Ten teams are selected by a vote of the Conference's 14 head coaches.

Michigan State claimed three spots on the All-Big Ten teams for the first time since 2013, when Lauren Wicinski (First Team), Kori Moster, and Alexis Mathews earned Conference accolades.

"It's fantastic to see our players honored for their success on the court," said head coach Cathy George. "It's so very difficult in the Big Ten, where we have so many top-tier talents. Our team has been so selfless all year, and we're getting contributions from so many players. That's what has made us successful as a program, and in the position where we're hosting the NCAA Tournament this weekend. These players are huge contributors to the accolades we've received both on and off the court, and they are so deserving of this recognition."

Garvelink has posted her best season statistically as a junior. She ranks second in the Big Ten and 14th nationally in blocks per set (1.44), an average which ranks seventh in a single-season at MSU. Her current 156 blocks on the season is 10th all-time in the single-season annals for the Spartans, while her 139 block assists is seventh. She is averaging 2.44 kills per set and hitting .357, which is good for sixth in the Conference and 56th among Division I players.

The junior's 399 career blocks puts her in ninth place in the all-time record book, while her 356 block assists is sixth. Garvelink's current 1.17 career blocks per set average ranks sixth in the MSU career annals. This is the first All-Big Ten honors of her career.

Minarick, a Big Ten All-Freshman Team pick in 2014, earns the first All-Big Ten honors of her career as well. She averages 10.31 assists per frame, which ranks eighth among Big Ten setters. She has five double-doubles on the season, and averages 2.00 digs per frame in addition to 0.33 service aces per set, which ranks fifth among Big Ten players. She has five double-doubles, and recently tied her career best with 55 assists in an epic five-setter at No. 2 Minnesota.

Bailey, who transferred from Marquette after the 2014 season, missed the entire 2015 campaign with an injury. She returned to the lineup this fall and has led the Spartans in kills per set (3.15, 10th B1G), rank second in digs (2.70/set) and fourth in service aces (0.28/set, 12th B1G). Bailey earns her third all-conference accolade of her career, as she was a two-time All- BIG EAST selection, earning the league's Player of the Year kudos in 2014. She has compiled eight double-doubles on the season, which included a season-best 19 kills and 20 digs in a home victory over Michigan on Nov. 12.

Fitterer, a four-year starter, is also having the best statistical season of her career. She's hitting .361, which is good for fifth in the Big Ten, while contributing 2.10 kills and 0.73 blocks per frame.

Michigan State opens NCAA Tournament play this Friday at Jenison Field House, hosting MAAC Champion Fairfield.
