EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski was selected to the 2012 AVCA All-Mideast Region team on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Sophomore libero Kori Moster also garnered honorable mention honors and it is the first time ever that two Spartans appeared on the list in the same season.
Wicinski led the team this season in points (5.34), kills (4.42) and service aces per set (0.64) and was named to the All-Big Ten team earlier this season. The Geneva, Ill., native is ranked fourth in the NCAA in aces per set, ranks sixth in the country in points per set and is 15th in kills per set.
This past weekend she had 20 kills and 10 digs in a 3-2 win over San Diego and also led all players with 23 kills in a 3-1 win over the defending National Champion UCLA Bruins.
Moster, a co-captain for the Spartans, led the team in digs and ranked second in the Big Ten with 4.66 per set. The Cincinnati, Ohio native was recently named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was also a All-Big Ten honorable mention. Moster reached the 1,000 career digs milestone this season and is currently second all-time at MSU with 587 digs this season.
Against San Diego, she reeled in a career-high 29 digs in a five-set win and followed that up with a 28-dig performance against seventh-seeded UCLA, a 3-1 win for MSU.
Wicinski, Moster and the Spartans will face Michigan on Friday, Dec. 7 in the Sweet 16 in Berkeley, Calif. The winner will face either Stanford or Iowa State in the Elite Eight on Saturday, Dec. 8.
