TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The No. 17 Michigan State women's cross country team placed fifth with 218 points at the Pre-NCAA Invitational Saturday morning, hosted by Indiana State.

No. 4 Colorado captured first-place honors in the 36-team White Division race with 94 points, followed by No. 3 Michigan (84), No. 7 Arizona State (127) and No. 20 North Carolina State (164). MSU finished ahead of four nationally ranked teams, including No. 9 Tennessee (sixth place - 221 points), No. 12 Villanova (seventh - 236), No. 15 UC-Santa Barbara (eighth - 270) and No. 14 Wake Forest (ninth - 280).

Freshman Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan) was the top runner for the Spartans in the women's 6K race as she crossed the finish line in sixth place out of 246 runners with a time of 20:25.6. Sophomore Katie Kelly (Port Austin, Mich.) placed 13th in the race with a time of 20:56.1 for MSU.


Other Spartans who competed in the meet were: redshirt sophomore Michelle Rafferty (Carmel, Ind.), who finished 26th with a time of 21:13.2, junior Brittany Ballard (Midland, Mich.), who finished 79th with a time of 21:56.9, freshman Nicole Bush (Wyoming, Mich.), who finished 94th with a time of 22:05.5, freshman Lisa Senakiewich (Davison, Mich.), who finished 133rd with a time of 22:29.5, and junior Leigha Christian (Rochester Hills, Mich.), who finished 163rd with a time of 22:51.

The Spartans will next compete in the Eastern Michigan Classic in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Friday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m.
