Sept. 6, 2001

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior Michelle Carson (Winnipeg, Man.) and Spartan freshman Chris Toloff (Novi, Mich.) were named Big Ten cross country athletes of the week (Sept. 4).

Carson took first in the women's 5-kilometer run (18:07.00). In Toloff's first collegiate 4-mile run, he placed second (20:42.79) behind Huntington College's John Ngure.

MSU men's and women's cross country teams performed well at their first meet of the 2001 season. At the Grand Valley Fall Classic (Allendale, Mich.) on August 31, the Spartan women took 10 of the top 13 spots and the men placed 12 of the top 17.

The Spartans' next showing will be September 21 when they host the Spartan Invitational.
