ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan State softball was defeated by rival Michigan by a final score of 8-0 on Tuesday night at Carol Hutchins Stadium at Alumni Field. The Spartans were unable to capitalize on nine runners left on base as the Wolverines took advantage of MSU's mistakes to claim victory.
Spartan Stats
Sophomore Faith Guidry (3-9) earned the start in the circle for Michigan State pitching 4.2 innings allowing four earned runs (eight total) on eight hits, striking out three.
Seniors Jessica Mabrey and Brooke Snyder each had a pair of hits for MSU on Tuesday night, while sophomore Macy Lee drew a pair of walks. Junior Alexis Barroso (single), senior Kendall Kates (walk) and freshman Britain Beshears (hit by pitch) also reached base for the Spartans.
How it Happened
Michigan did its best to take advantage of several Spartan miscues early, first scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning. The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the third after an error extended the inning.
A ball lost in the sun contributed to Michigan's fourth run of the contest as the Michigan State outfield was unable to track a bases loaded fly ball by Ellie Sieler.
Michigan State had its best scoring chance of the evening in the fifth inning when Mabrey, Snyder and Beshears loaded the bases with one out. A force out at home and a line out to left ended the MSU threat.
Michigan made the most of a bases loaded situation in their half of the fifth, scoring three runs on an RBI single by Ella McVey. The Wolverines would go on to win the game in five as Sieler singled McVey home.
Up Next
Michigan State travels to Illinois this weekend for the first time since 2011. The Spartans will take on the Fighting Illini April 21-23 in Champaign. Saturday night's contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
